The IACT Story
IACT is a visionary campus program and is making a powerful impact on the lives of Jewish students in New England and beyond. As we expand nationally, through cooperation with Hillel International we look forward to many more years of success.
Lets take a look at the story so far.
In 1999 Michael Steinhardt and Charles Bronfman launch Birthright Israel which provides an unprecedented opportunity for Jewish students to travel to Israel for free, thereby strengthening their connection to Israel and opening up avenues for involvement in Jewish life.
By 2005 Birthright's numbers hit 100,000 and CJP tasks Associate Vice President Cheryl Aronson with creating a comprehensive vision to ensure Jewish students in the Boston area leverage the gift of Birthright Israel.
IACT establishes the three pillars of engagement which drive our activities:
IACT begins with three New England campuses, Tufts, UMASS/Amherst and Brandeis and funds a full time IACT Campus Coordinator who recruits students for travel on a campus bus that benefits from an enhanced itinerary and trip experience.
IACT coordinators are trained in intensive training conferences each semester, enjoy ongoing coaching and benefit from on-site visits from senior IACT staff.
IACT Coordinators are tasked with providing a holistic experience that encompasses the pre-trip, trip and post-trip stages of Birthright Israel.
and the results?
The number of Birthright Israel participants grows at each campus and an average of 80% of all returnees at each campus became engaged in ongoing Jewish educational opportunities.
Boston University, Northeastern and Harvard are added to IACT.

CJP, together with Jerusalem-based Upstart Ideas, establishes the IACT initiative which is designed to transform Jewish life on campus by inspiring Jewish students to actively engage with their identity as a result of participation on the Birthright Israel trip and in post-trip activities.
